Technically her work blurs the line between the mechanical and the hand crafted. Scissors, paint, sticky tape, photocopies and computers are all used at the intermediary stage to create architecturally impossible landscapes. By creating images of strong, usually concrete structures that look as though they could exist in the world, weaknesses are revealed to expose a lack of stability and potentially an inability to support the weight they bear. Lucille's work addresses the human condition and its symbolic metaphors. Symbols such as bridges, water and reflections are important to her work. Water has traditionally been seen as a symbol of the unconscious mind and philosophers such as Gaston Bachelard and the psychoanalyst Carl Jung have written extensively about it. Artist Statement Light reflects off the surfaces of objects to create in each person their own viewpoint of the world. We can only see what each surface chooses to reveal and from this our understanding of the world and the people in it is created. We are only able to receive fleeting glimpses of what lies beneath the surface and as such our understanding of the world can only ever be incomplete, fragmentary and shifting. To explore the tension between surface and depth the reflective qualities of water have been exploited to create an environment which is at once familiar and foreign. Architectural and perceptual impossibilities have been created so that the images no longer refer to a specific reality but to a subjective created reality, a shifting psychological landscape. My work seeks to remind us that what is reflected back to us is only a fraction of what lies beneath the surface, that reflections can distract us from seeing what is really there. |
